Tenerife design festival second edition, warming up

This event dedicated to the design and innovation will take place at different locations on Tenerife’s island from 13 to October 23th.

TDF2010

After the success achieved during the first edition (2009), Tenerife Design Festival comes for second time. The program is full of new things and projects about design and experimentation, always under the three main pillars of the festival: local identity, contrasting landscapes and tourism.

The festival proposes the design in a dynamic way through five interconnected areas, including cooperation and experimentation, conferences, exhibition, competitions, workshops and urban interventions. The designers and creators are national and internationally prestigious.

One of the main news this year is the area called “TDFLow Island”, which focuses on a series of experimental projects between design and cuisine. The development will take place in Low Island –hence the name- area, mainly in Garachico, town of great historical and artistic importance. TDFLow Island lands in this region in order to mix culture and gastronomic traditions with contemporary design.

The other areas of the festival have a large variety and kinds of activities. TDFAward focuses this year on Fuentealta competition. Basically, the image of the bottles of water must be changed or reinvented by designers.TDFAtmósfera comprises several exhibitions and urban interventions that can be seen at various points of the island. TDFLab will be composed of experimental workshops aimed to designers and design students. Finally, TDFSolution will be the platform to spread the design from a theoretical point of view.

About TDF 2009

The first Tenerife Design Festival was held between 19 and 25 October 2009 in Santa Cruz of Tenerife. The attendance was over 6000 people, including professionals, students and general public. They could enjoy the workshops, conferences, exhibitions and other activities that the event involved.

TDF is a gamble designed by CTND NoQuietDesign, formed by Yapci Ramos and Samuel Cabrera. It’s created to innovate, taking our own traditions, sharing international design trends with local resources. Innovation and creativity to make a global awareness, encouraging and valuing the design as a tool for changes and economic impulse.

The Met Hotel

Art needs space. Spaces need art.

VP.CF054448

For many years now, this has been the premise behind much of Christina Chandris’ work, a premise she realised in several of the art projects she curated. Always on the lookout for both well-known and unknown artists, her collector’s eye has been sharpened and she developed unfailing instincts for contemporary art. Highly committed to the fostering of art in her private efforts, she also supports and supervises large-scale art projects that are open to the public. The MET Hotel’s art collection is a new and unique project by Christina Chandris. For the first time worldwide, an exhibition concept that follows museum standards was developed and realised in the rooms and spaces of a hotel. Christina Chandris and all who are involved in this project want to offer an extraordinary experience to the guests of the MET Hotel: to live in close contact with works of art that usually can only be viewed in museums or private art collections.

The first permanent collection What’s More Alive Than You

wmaty.com

On air at WMATY.COM the entire first shoes and bags PERMANENT COLLECTION, branded WHAT’S MORE ALIVE THAN YOU®.
This PERMANENT COLLECTION is the first real step towards a new perspective of fashion; it will be available online exclusively on WMATY.COM by next November with the second collection which will feature the new authors selected by the second creative call ended last June.
PERMANENT COLLECTION comes from the experience and professionalism of all those taking part in the several stages of development for the products: who creates the design, selected from thousands around the world, to those who, thanks to the skill, develops and realizes our artwork.
The production of the first PERMANENT COLLECTION lasted months and it was the result of a long search for materials by special texture, resistant, recycled or reused.
It also needed to manual and high-quality manufacturings, realized, in every stage, entirely in Italy.
This collection, as the others will follow, are in balance with the nature while minimizing the use of materials for the development and realization of the artworks as well as control the movement and transport of goods.

The Art of Shocking Politics

Controversial Paintings of Political Assassinations Come to New York

Crossman Panel Discussion

As the political climate heats up in the countdown to November’s election, an art show is about to hit town that is likely to add fuel to the fire. State of Shock imagines a world in which President Obama has been assassinated, and shows America’s decline into recrimination and violence in the weeks following the shooting. The show opened to an outcry of protests when exhibited in Charleston SC earlier this year.

Huge depictions of revenge attacks against Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter led to conservatives publicly condemning the show’s original installation in Charleston, with the City Paper describing “outrage in the community” and a TV station’s message board flooded with complaints. In response some political websites leapt to the show’s defense, with the influential Daily Kos website saying that State of Shock “needs to be seen by as broad an audience as possible.”

The controversial show is the creation of British artist Fletcher Crossman who was stunned by the level of anger he saw in American politics. “There’s just so much hatred out there right now,” Crossman says. “We’ve got people carrying loaded weapons to Obama events, and political leaders implying that we might settle our differences with guns. It’s like juggling with matches over a pile of gunpowder, so State of Shock imagines the consequences if the unthinkable happened. ”

State of Shock 3

Aware of the criticism that the show panders to a voyeuristic desire to see certain personalities receiving a beating, Crossman is quick to point out that the tone is non-partisan. “It’s about anger and hatred,” he says, “not about Conservatives and Liberals. A number of people have said it made them reflect on their own feelings.”

“The interesting thing is that we received praise and criticism from both sides of the political divide,” adds Mike Elder, owner of Eye Level Art. “A lot of people came expecting to be appalled because of what they’d read in the press, but they left saying that the show is actually very thought-provoking.”

State of Shock combines large-scale paintings with media mock-ups of the New York Times, Fox News, and other news outlets in order to tell a story. “It’s all about making it seem real,” Crossman explains. “We wanted people to feel what it would be like to actually read those headlines. Artists should be addressing what’s happening in the real world, and when you see this show you are looking at the same cast of characters that you see on your TV screens every night.”

State of Shock 2

Previously the British Council has sponsored exhibits of Crossman’s work at the New York Art Expo, and earlier this year his paintings were shown at the Katzen Art Museum in Washington DC. The artist now lives in New York.

State of Shock will open with a reception on Thursday 30th September at 6pm, which will be free and open to the public. The exhibit is located at 548 W 28th Street in Chelsea, and the will run until Friday 15th 2010.
